As part of the travelling flower market, Piazze in Fiore, Bologna’s Piazza Minghetti was a riot of colorful flowers this weekend. From Friday through Sunday, flower vendors sold everything from bulbs to small fruit trees, as well as garden decorations. It reminded me a lot of the weekly Saturday flower market in Utrecht.
I was tempted by many of the flowers, despite my black thumb and general ignorance about flowers. But they were all so pretty! I was particularly tempted by the brightly colorful ones that supposedly retain their color and don’t need water. I really should have given them a try.
The one plant I did purchase, which has orange flowers, is looking like it can’t decide if it will live or die. Perhaps if I actually knew what it was, I could treat it appropriately. Oh well, it’s orange, so hopefully a few more of the buds will still be blooming in time for Koningsdag at the end of the month. (I like to collect holidays and the Dutch King’s Day is always a fun celebration with large quantities of the color orange.) If anyone knows what it is and how to treat it, that knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
So since it’s a Monday and there’s some crazy weather in parts of the world, here are some flowers to brighten your day. Best of all, these are perpetually in bloom! By the way, the Piazze in Fiore is a travelling flower market and will be in Ravenna next weekend. Check out their site for upcoming dates and locations if you’re interested.
What a glorious display of color! We are so ready for sun and flowers out here in western Oregon. Your flower is a Dahlia, and a beautiful orange color. They are usually grown from tubers in the garden, but the ones in pots are grown from seed. Give it sun, water well but do not let it be soggy, and perhaps give some plant food. Here is a site with more information: http://www.thegardenhelper.com/dahlia.html

Thank you so much! We were out of town yesterday and I forgot about it, but I just went and watered it and moved it into more sun. Some of the buds are starting to bloom. Yay! It’s certainly the time of year when I’m ready for a bit of green and nature, although I could do with a little less of the pollen and other things that set my allergies off. I hope you get some good weather there in Oregon, soon.

I’ve definitely found myself drawn to green areas, parks, and flower markets these past few weeks. Though I could have done with slightly cooler temperatures for a bit longer. I hate the heat and it’s getting too warm for me already.
